Fiber Internet Availability in 2026

Fiber optic internet is now available to roughly 50% of U.S. households — up from just 30% in 2020. Massive investment from both ISPs and federal programs is driving rapid expansion, with industry projections suggesting 60-65% coverage by 2028.

But availability varies dramatically by location. Here’s who offers fiber, where, and how to check if it reaches your address.

Major Fiber Internet Providers

AT&T Fiber

Coverage~25% of U.S. homes
States21 states, primarily South and Midwest
Speeds300 Mbps – 5 Gbps
PriceStarting at $55/mo
ExpansionAdding 3+ million homes per year

AT&T is one of the most aggressive fiber builders, focusing expansion on underserved suburbs and mid-size cities in their existing footprint.

Verizon 5G Home Internet

CoverageNationwide (100M+ households)
StatesAll 50 states
Technology5G / 4G LTE fixed wireless
PriceStarting at $50/mo ($35 with Verizon wireless)
Price Lock4–5 years

Verizon’s fixed wireless product is nationwide, no-install, and backed by one of the longest price locks in the industry. Where 5G signal is strong, speeds hit 300–1000 Mbps. A compelling alternative for customers where fiber hasn’t yet arrived.

Frontier Fiber

Coverage~7+ million homes
States25 states
Speeds500 Mbps – 5 Gbps
PriceStarting at $49.99/mo
ExpansionRapid (2+ million homes per year)

Frontier is the fiber expansion story of 2024-2026. After emerging from bankruptcy, they’re building fiber at an aggressive pace — often in smaller markets that AT&T and Verizon overlook.

Optimum (Altice) Fiber

CoverageParts of NY, NJ, CT
Speeds300 Mbps – 8 Gbps
PriceStarting at $40/mo
ExpansionReplacing cable network with fiber throughout service area

Optimum is systematically replacing its cable infrastructure with fiber. If you’re in their service area and don’t have fiber yet, it’s likely coming within 1-2 years.

Brightspeed

Coverage20 states
Speeds500 Mbps – 2 Gbps
PriceStarting at $49/mo
ExpansionRapid (targeting underserved areas)

Brightspeed acquired CenturyLink’s consumer operations and is building fiber specifically in areas with poor existing broadband — exactly where it’s needed most.

AltaFiber

CoverageOH, KY, IN
Speeds250 Mbps – 2 Gbps
PriceStarting at $39.99/mo
ExpansionExpanding throughout Cincinnati/Ohio region

A regional powerhouse offering some of the most affordable fiber pricing in the country.

Windstream Kinetic

Coverage18 states
Speeds200 Mbps – 1 Gbps
PriceStarting at $39.99/mo
ExpansionTargeting rural and small-town markets

Windstream focuses fiber deployment on rural communities — areas where residents have been waiting years for broadband alternatives.

CoverageUses partner networks (AT&T, Frontier, etc.)
Speeds300 Mbps – 5 Gbps
PriceStarting at $49.99/mo
ExpansionGrows as partner networks expand

EarthLink resells fiber from the providers above, often with competitive pricing and better customer service.

Where Is Fiber Expanding Fastest?

Federal Investment: The BEAD Program

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program is the largest broadband investment in U.S. history — $42.45 billion allocated to states for broadband buildout. Most states are prioritizing fiber for their funded projects.

Key states receiving major BEAD funding:

  • Texas: $3.3 billion
  • California: $1.8 billion
  • Virginia: $1.5 billion
  • Louisiana: $1.4 billion
  • Alabama: $1.4 billion

Private Investment

ISPs are also investing tens of billions in fiber independently:

  • AT&T: $24+ billion through 2027
  • Frontier: $4+ billion through 2027
  • Brightspeed: $2+ billion through 2027

How to Check Fiber Availability at Your Address

Step 1: Use Our Availability Checker

Enter your address in our availability checker to see all providers — including fiber options — available at your home.

Step 2: Check Provider Websites Directly

If you want to verify:

  • AT&T: att.com — Enter address for fiber check
  • Verizon 5G Home Internet: verizon.com/home/internet — Check 5G coverage at your address
  • Frontier: frontier.com — Check by address
  • Optimum: optimum.com — Verify fiber or cable at your address

Step 3: Ask Your City/County

Many municipalities maintain broadband maps showing planned fiber buildout. Check your city or county website for broadband expansion plans.

What If Fiber Isn’t Available Yet?

If fiber hasn’t reached your address:

  1. Check cable internet — Spectrum, Optimum (cable), or regional providers offer 300+ Mbps
  2. Try T-Mobile 5G Home Internet — $50/mo, no installation, available in many areas
  3. Ask about buildout timelines — Call Frontier, AT&T, or your local provider to ask when fiber is expected in your area
  4. Register interest — Many providers let you register your address as “interested in fiber.” This helps them prioritize buildout areas.

Fiber availability changes quarterly as providers extend their networks. Just because fiber isn’t available today doesn’t mean it won’t be in 6-12 months.
