How to Protect Yourself From Bill Shock

Always look at the standard price

Before signing up, ask: "What will I pay in month 13?" If the rep can't give a clear answer, find it in the broadband label — now legally required at point of sale.

Choose providers with price locks

Verizon 5G Home Internet (4–5 years), T-Mobile 5G All-In, and Spectrum (1 year) offer the strongest price protection. Prioritize these when available at your address.

Set a calendar reminder 60 days out

Mark your promo expiration date and set a reminder 60 days before. That gives you time to negotiate, switch, or at minimum threaten to switch before the rate hike hits.

Contact retention before the promo expires

ISPs have unpublished "save" offers for customers threatening to cancel. Message support and say: "My promo ends in 60 days and I've seen better rates elsewhere." Works in ~60% of cases.

Switch providers to keep promo pricing

If a competing provider is available, switching every 1–2 years keeps you on promo rates permanently. Our experts can find the best current deal at your address in 60 seconds.

Read the broadband label before you sign

FCC-mandated broadband labels (required since 2024) show the promo price, standard price, contract terms, and data caps. If you weren't shown one, ask for it in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

ISPs advertise promotional rates that expire after 12 or 24 months. Once the promo ends, your bill automatically increases to the standard rate — often without a warning beyond fine print. This practice is legal but heavily criticized. Always read the standard price, not just the promotional price, before signing up.
Our analysis of 121 plans across the industry found that 25 plans carry a price increase after the promotional period. The average monthly increase is $20.76 — or $249.12 per year in extra costs that customers don't expect.
Verizon 5G Home Internet offers the strongest written price lock — 4 years on 5G Home and Plus plans, 5 years on the Ultimate plan. T-Mobile 5G Home Internet offers a lifetime price lock on their All-In plan. Spectrum guarantees prices for 1 year. Most other providers offer no formal price lock.
Yes, and it works more often than people expect. Call your provider's retention department (not general customer service) and mention that you've seen better rates from competitors. ISPs typically have unpublished "save" offers worth $10–$30/month. Threatening to cancel triggers the best offers.
As of 2024, the FCC requires ISPs to disclose promotional vs. standard pricing on standardized broadband labels at point of sale. Providers must display the monthly price after the promo period ends. If your bill increases and you were not shown a broadband label, you may have grounds for an FCC complaint.
This is called "ISP churning" and it works — if competing providers are available at your address. Many customers save $300–$600/year by switching when their promo expires. The downside is installation hassle and equipment return. Services like Internet 4 ALL make this easy by finding current promos at your address instantly.
